Sensory Sauna
Project Type
Architectural Design
Date
March 2023
Adress
Centria University of Applied Sciences, Kokkola, Finland
The project deals with the design of a Finnish sauna with the preservation of the traditional cultural values of the local landscape in the spirit of organic minimalism. It was developed in collaboration with Centria University of Applied Sciences as an idea for a sauna manufacturing company Tmi Tuomo Okkonen. The inspiration comes from the topography of the Finnish landscape, which was also depicted in the works of architect Alvar Aalto.
The simple, yet complex architecture and interior space feature contrasts between the rational and the ethereal, the modern and the traditional, pleasing material analogies and sophisticated details. An innovative reference is the dovetail joint detail forming the outer edge of the wavy seating. This method makes up for the company's deficit of working with wood bending and going beyond the limits of conventional sauna seating designs.
The interior draws on the inner psychology of the human being and interacts appropriately with the user through the senses or the play of light and shadow. The final design is a sensory experience that can be felt, seen and perceived and will resonate with every visitor.
