Biomimetic Kinetic Light

Project Type

Product Design

Date

August 2024

Applied research Biomimetic Properties of Kinetic Natural Principles and Their Application in Design focuses on the development of bio-inspired kinetic lightings and a work microspace imitating living phenomena related to trees and lignocellulosic elements of wood, with the aim of creating a healthier interior environment. The work explores the emulation of active biomimetic mechanisms of wood and cellulose-based elements into the experimental properties of design. The research primarily investigates the movement of the maple samara and, to a lesser extent, the double cone of conifers and the pine cone. These natural phenomena are abstracted into aesthetic, functional, physical, and mechanical parameters, on the basis of which they achieve their functions, and are subsequently translated into new principles for design.

The intention is to create functional and viable products inspired by the natural world, which at the same time serve as biophilic elements. They replicate natural experiences within the built environment and, through emotions, restore the connection between humans and nature. This research focuses on the methods of biomimicry and biophilia, which it examines in general terms while also applying them in the context of design research. The acquired knowledge is further developed in the experimental part, where it is transformed into concrete design outcomes. The final results are bio-inspired kinetic luminaires and a kinetic micro-environment that pay tribute to nature in a new way.
